Bring a piece of WWII naval history to your LEGO collection with this 1:160-scale model of the German S-100 class Schnellboot, a fast and heavily armed torpedo boat operated by the Kriegsmarine. The Allies commonly referred to German Schnellboote as “E-boats,” short for “Enemy boats.”

One of the most iconic features of the mid-to-late-war S-Boats was the raised foredeck enclosing the forward torpedo tubes, protecting the mechanisms from harsh weather. The high, rounded bow acted as a wave breaker, helping the 35-metre boat reach speeds of up to 43.5 knots in the rough waters of the English Channel and North Sea.

I used a variety of curved slope pieces to capture the distinctive shape of the bow and raised foredeck. The round-bottom hull is also built using curved slopes, helping recreate the distinctive hull form of the original Schnellboot.

At the end of the foredeck sits the armoured bridge, a rounded, dome-shaped structure designed to provide protection from shrapnel and small-arms fire. I used curved wedge pieces to recreate its distinctive shape.

The lever pieces are used to represent the 20 mm Flak 38 cannons, with one mounted forward and another amidships. The forward gun is semi-recessed into the centre of the raised deck using a headlight brick, giving the gun a lower profile and providing some protection for the gunner.

The large 37 mm Flak M42 with its gun shield took several iterations to get right. Using bar pieces made the cannon barrel look too thick, until I came across the laser cannon pieces from the X-wing polybag. They turned out to be perfect for representing the distinctive barrel.

The model also includes four spare torpedoes for reloading. The forward pair are partially recessed into the raised foredeck and tucked into the narrow hull. I used 3L bars for these, while the rear pair use 4L bars.

At the stern, four black 1x1 round plates represent the mines carried on the mine rails, represented by light bluish gray plates, ready to be released over the stern.

The three propellers are built using gold flower-petal round plates, while a bar handle plate represents the rudder. The rudder is cleverly attached using a trans-clear round plate.

The S-Boat is displayed on a reddish-brown base with gold decoration on all four corners, inspired by the classic wooden display models often used for ships.

I really enjoyed the challenge of capturing the distinctive shape and details of the S-100 at this small scale. I hope you enjoy building it as much as I enjoyed designing it!
